  • The IVS estimates now include the Philippines and Vietnam as separate markets (previously grouped in Other Asia). Please see the IVS survey methodology page for more detail.
  • Unless we say otherwise, we compared the summary results for:
    • the March quarter 2026 to the March quarter 2025
    • the year ending March 2026 to the year ending March 2025.
  • Spend is reported as spend in Australia. Spend in Australia is different to total spend. Total spend includes:
    • purchases made overseas such as international connections and stopovers, including airfares
    • other pre-travel or post-travel spend in the source market or elsewhere outside Australia on things like luggage, visas, duty-free retail and ground transport. 

International trips and spend key results

International visitation to Australia reached 8.5 million trips to Australia in the year ending March 2026.

The top reasons for travel to Australia in the year ending March 2026 were:

  • Holiday travel with 3.7 million trips.
    • 14% up on March 2025 levels.
    • Spend in Australia was $13.5 billion, 22% up on March 2025 levels.
  • Visiting friends and relatives with 2.8 million trips.
    • 8% up on March 2025 levels.
    • Spend in Australia was $5.5 billion, 10% up on March 2025 levels.
  • Business travel with 776,000 trips.
    • 1% up on March 2025 levels.
    • Spend in Australia was $2.0 billion, 3% up on March 2025 levels.
  • Education with 554,000 trips.
    • This was 9% up on March 2025 levels.
    • Spend in Australia was $15.3 billion, 23% up on March 2025 levels.

Total spend in the year ending March 2026 was $57.6 billion. This was 16% up on March 2025 levels. Total spend includes:

  • purchases made overseas such as international connections and stopovers, including airfares
  • other pre-travel or post-travel spend in the source market or elsewhere outside Australia on things like luggage, visas, duty-free retail and ground transport.
