  • The IVS estimates now include the Philippines and Vietnam as separate markets (previously grouped in Other Asia). Please see the IVS survey methodology page for more detail.
  • Unless we say otherwise, we compared the summary results for:
    • the March quarter 2025 to the March quarter 2024
    • the year ending March 2025 to the year ending March 2024.
  • Spend is reported as spend in Australia. Spend in Australia is different to total spend. Total spend includes:
    • purchases made overseas such as international connections and stopovers, including airfares
    • other pre-travel or post-travel spend in the source market or elsewhere outside Australia on things like luggage, visas, duty-free retail and ground transport. 

International trips and spend key results

International visitation to Australia reached 7.7 million trips to Australia in the year ending March 2025.

The top reasons for travel to Australia in the year ending March 2025 were:

  • Holiday travel with 3.3 million trips.
    • 11% up on March 2024 levels.
    • Spend in Australia was $12.0 billion, 24% up on March 2024 levels.
  • Visiting friends and relatives with 2.6 million trips.
    • 3% up on March 2024 levels.
    • Spend in Australia was $5.3 billion, 12% up on March 2024 levels.
  • Business travel with 772,000 trips.
    • 4% up on March 2024 levels.
    • Spend in Australia was $2.0 billion, 8% down on March 2024 levels.
  • Education with 509,000 trips.
    • This was 10% up on March 2024 levels.
    • Spend in Australia was $12.5 billion, 11% up on March 2024 levels

Australia’s top 5 international markets for the year ending March 2025 were:

  • New Zealand with 1.2 million trips.
    • 2% up on March 2024 levels.
    • Spend in Australia was $2.2 billion, 8% up on March 2024 levels.
  • China with 860,000 trips.
    • 26% up on March 2024 levels. 
    • Spend in Australia was $9.2 billion, 28% up on March 2024 levels.
  • United States of America with 672,000 trips.
    • 1% up on March 2024 levels.
    • Spend in Australia was $2.3 billion, 11% up on March 2024 levels.
  • United Kingdom with 613,000 trips.
    • 6% up on March 2024 levels.
    • Spend in Australia was $2.4 billion, 21% up on March 2024 levels.
  • India with 427,000 trips.
    • 10% up on March 2024 levels.
    • Spend in Australia was $1.8 billion, 23% up on March 2024 levels. 

Pre-COVID19 Comparison

International tourism to Australia has recovered following the COVID-19 pandemic. In the year ending March 2025:

  • spend in Australia was 16% up on March 2019 levels.
  • number of trips were 90% of March 2019 levels.
  • nights spent in Australia were 10% up on March 2019 levels.
  • total trip spend was 19% up on March 2019 levels.

Total spend

Total spend in the year ending March 2025 was $52.6 billion. This was 12% up on March 2024 levels. Total spend includes:

  • purchases made overseas such as international connections and stopovers, including airfares
  • other pre-travel or post-travel spend in the source market or elsewhere outside Australia on things like luggage, visas, duty-free retail and ground transport.
