  • the September quarter 2023 to the September quarter 2022
  • the year ending September 2023 to the year ending September 2022.

Domestic trips and spend key results

September quarter 2023

In the September quarter 2023, domestic tourism results showed growth, stabilising following a period of strong growth coming out of the pandemic. Compared to the September quarter 2022:

  • spend was up 1% or $399 million to $28.4 billion
  • domestic overnight trips were up 1% or 217,000
  • nights away were down 2% or 1.8 million.

Older Australians recorded strong travel results in the September quarter 2023. However, this was offset by softer results for younger age groups.

Year ending September 2023

Year ending September 2023 saw continued recovery from the COVID-19 impacted year ending September 2022. In the year ending September 2023:

  • spend was up by 24% or $20.9 billion to $108.7 billion
  • overnight trips were up 10% or 10.0 million to 111.6 million
  • nights away were up 7% or 26.3 million to 402.9 million.

Compared to the year ending September 2019:

  • spend was up 37% or $29.6 billion
  • overnight trips were down 4% or 4.1 million
  • nights away were down 2% or 7.2 million.
