The National Visitor Survey (NVS) results provide statistics on how Australian residents travel in Australia. You can find national, state and territory results for the:

  • nights spent on a trip
  • amount spent on a trip.

  • see the changes compared over various timeframes impacted by COVID-19.

Unless we say otherwise, we compared the summary results for:

  • the December 2022 quarter to the December 2019 quarter
  • the year ending December 2022 to the year ending December 2019.

Domestic trips and spend key results

Year ending December 2022

  • Domestic overnight trips fell 8% to 108.2 million.
  • Spend rose 25% or $20.6 billion to $101.3 billion.
  • Intrastate trips recovered faster than interstate trips over the year. However, spend was up for both.
    • Interstate trips were down 13% to 33.4 million. Spend was up 22% to $45.6 billion.
    • Intrastate trips were down 5% to 77.0 million. Spend was up 29% to $55.7 billion.
  • Trips to regional areas recovered faster than trips to capital cities over the year, however, spend was up for both.
    • Overnight trips to regional Australia were down 3% to 71.1 million. Spend was up 35% to $56.4 billion.
    • Capital city overnight trips were down 14% to 42.1 million. Spend was up 15% to $44.8 billion.

December quarter 2022

Domestic tourism continued to recover from pandemic impacts. Trips remain down on pre-pandemic levels, but spend was up.

  • Domestic overnight trips decreased by 6% to 27.7 million.
  • Spend increased by 34% or $7.0 billion to $27.5 billion.

Spend recovery was driven by an increase in spend on trips for:

  • holiday: up 47% or $4.5 billion
  • visiting friends and relatives: up 31% or $1.4 billion
  • business: up 19% or $1.1 billion

Spend on key expenditure categories continue to be strong. In the December quarter 2022, the 3 highest spend categories were:

  • accommodation ($7.7 billion, up $2.5 billion or 49%)
  • food and drink ($7.0 billion, up $1.5 billion or 27%)
  • airfares ($4.2 billion, up $1.1 billion or 34%).
