A note on data
From 1 January 2025, the collection of the international visitor survey transitioned to a new service provider. Following this change, TRA has been closely monitoring the results to ensure that the data continues to be of high quality and fit for purpose. An issue was found with the June quarter spend data, meaning it has had to be revised. As a result, the data has been amended in this publication since the initial release.
Year ending June 2025
The International Visitor Survey (IVS) results provide statistics on how international visitors travel within Australia. You can find national, state and territory results for the:
- number of trips taken
- nights spent on a trip
- amount spent in Australia
- total amount spent on a trip.

Notes on the data
- The IVS estimates now include the Philippines and Vietnam as separate markets (previously grouped in Other Asia). Please see the IVS survey methodology page for more detail.
- Unless we say otherwise, we compared the summary results for:
- the June quarter 2025 to the June quarter 2024
- the year ending June 2025 to the year ending June 2024.
- Spend is reported as spend in Australia. Spend in Australia is different to total spend. Total spend includes:
- purchases made overseas such as international connections and stopovers, including airfares
- other pre-travel or post-travel spend in the source market or elsewhere outside Australia on things like luggage, visas, duty-free retail and ground transport.
International trips and spend key results
International visitation to Australia reached 7.8 million trips to Australia in the year ending June 2025.
The top reasons for travel to Australia in the year ending June 2025 were:
- Holiday travel with 3.3 million trips.
- 7% up on June 2024 levels.
- Spend in Australia was $11.4 billion, 12% up on June 2024 levels.
- Visiting friends and relatives with 2.7 million trips.
- 6% up on June 2024 levels.
- Spend in Australia was $5.2 billion, 9% up on June 2024 levels.
- Business travel with 745,000 trips.
- 4% down on June 2024 levels.
- Spend in Australia was $1.8 billion, 20% down on June 2024 levels.
- Education with 514,000 trips.
- This was 10% up on June 2024 levels.
- Spend in Australia was $12.7 billion, 11% up on June 2024 levels.

International tourism to Australia has recovered following the COVID-19 pandemic. In the year ending June 2025:
- spend in Australia was 14% up on June 2019 levels.
- number of trips were 90% of June 2019 levels.
- nights spent in Australia were 10% up on June 2019 levels.
- total trip spend was 14% up on June 2019 levels.
Total spend
Total spend in the year ending June 2025 was $50.7 billion. This was 6% up on June 2024 levels. Total spend includes:
- purchases made overseas such as international connections and stopovers, including airfares
- other pre-travel or post-travel spend in the source market or elsewhere outside Australia on things like luggage, visas, duty-free retail and ground transport.
