Domestic tourism July 2023

The National Visitor Survey (NVS) monthly snapshots estimate tourism activity in the related month. We also produce quarterly and annual summaries.

This report compares the month of July 2023 with the month of July 2022 unless stated otherwise.

Key results

July 2023 saw mixed domestic tourism results when compared to the July 2022. Overnight spend and trips were up. However, the number nights away were down. 

When compared to July 2019, spend was up 39% and overnight trips were up 2%. However, nights were down 2%.

Breakdown of results

In July 2023:

  • spend was $10.0 billion. This was up 1% on July 2022 and 39% on July 2019.
  • visitors spent 35.8 million nights away. This was down 3% on July 2022 and 2% on July 2019.
  • there were 9.9 million overnight trips, up 5% on July 2022 and 2% on July 2019.
  • early data shows domestic overnight trip rates for August 2023 were higher than August 2022 and August 2019. Data for the first 3 weeks of September 2023 showed slightly weaker results compared to September 2019 and 2022.

The September 2023 trip rate shows 28% of NVS respondents interviewed in weeks 1, 2 and 3 took one or more overnight trips. The reference period for these interviews would be the preceding 28 days. The return date for some trips would be in August 2023. 

The overnight trip estimate of 9.9 million for July 2023 refers to trips that ended in the same month.

Spend by travel purpose

Results for July 2023 show an increase in travel to visit friends and relatives as families took the opportunity to travel during the July school holidays. Business travel spend also increased. However, both were offset by decreases in holiday travel spend. 

In July 2023, Australians spent:

  • $5.3 billion on holiday travel
  • $1.9 billion on travel to visit friends and relatives
  • $2.5 billion on travel for business purposes.

Compared to July 2022, this was a:

  • 11% decrease on holiday travel
  • 10% increase on travel to visit friends and relatives
  • 31% increase on travel for business purposes.

Compared to a pre-COVID July 2019, this was a:

  • 41% increase on holiday travel
  • 42% increase on travel to visit friends and relatives
  • 42% increase on travel for business purposes.

Interstate and intrastate travel

Interstate

Interstate results were mixed for July 2023 compared to July 2022. Overnight trips were stronger. However, nights away and spend were weaker. 

In July 2023, Australians:

  • took 3.3 million interstate trips
  • spent $5.5 billion.

Compared to July 2022, this was a:

  • 3% increase in overnight trips
  • 6% decrease in spend.

Intrastate

Intrastate overnight trips and spend were strong in July 2023 compared to July 2022. 

In July 2023, Australians:

  • took 6.6 million intrastate trips
  • spent $4.5 billion.

Compared to July 2022, this was a:

  • 6% increase in overnight trips
  • 11% increase in spend.

Domestic day trips

In July 2023, Australians:

  • took 18.8 million day trips 
  • spent $2.6 billion.

Compared to July 2022 this was a:

  • 8% increase in day trips 
  • 2% decrease in spend.

Compared to a pre-COVID July 2019, this was a:

  • 13% decrease in day trips 
  • 23% increase in spend.
