This report compares the month of November 2023 with November 2022 unless stated otherwise.

Key results

November 2023 saw stronger domestic tourism results when compared to November 2022. Overnight spend and trips were up, while nights away were on par. 

Breakdown of results

In November 2023:

  • spend was $8.7 billion. This was up 3% on November 2022.
  • there were 9.2 million overnight trips. This was up 8% on November 2022.
  • visitors spent 28.6 million nights away. This was on par with November 2022.

Early data shows domestic overnight trip rates for December 2023 were stronger compared to December 2022 but slightly weaker than December 2019. Data for the first 3 weeks of January 2024 show weaker results when compared to January 2023.

The January 2024 trip rate shows 34% of NVS respondents interviewed in weeks 1, 2 and 3 took one or more overnight trips. The reference period for these interviews would be the preceding 28 days. The return date for some trips would be in December 2023.

The overnight trip estimate of 9.2 million for November 2023 refers to overnight trips returned from in that month.

Trips by main purpose of travel

Results for November 2023 show increases in trips for visiting friends and relatives and for business, while holiday trips were down.

In November 2023, Australians took:

  • 3.3 million holiday trips
  • 3.0 million trips for visiting friends and relatives
  • 2.5 million business trips.

Compared to November 2022, this was a:

  • 4% decrease on holiday trips
  • 19% increase for trips to visit friends and relatives
  • 14% increase for business trips.

Interstate and intrastate travel

Interstate

Interstate overnight trips, nights away and spend were weaker in November 2023 compared to November 2022. 

In November 2023, Australians:

  • took 2.8 million interstate trips
  • spent $4.4 billion.

Compared to November 2022, this was a:

  • 1% decrease in overnight trips
  • 7% decrease in spend.

Intrastate

Comparatively, intrastate trips were stronger than November 2022.

In November 2023, Australians:

  • took 6.4 million intrastate trips
  • spent $4.3 billion.

Compared to November 2022, this was a:

  • 12% increase in overnight trips
  • 16% increase in spend.

Domestic day trips

In November 2023, Australians:

  • took 16.8 million day trips
  • spent $2.8 billion.

Compared to November 2022 this was a:

  • 8% decrease in day trips
  • 9% decrease in spend.
