Tourism in Australia’s regions

Tourism plays a significant part in Australia’s economy, contributing 3.2% to GDP and 4.9% to employment in 2016–17.

In 2016–17, domestic and international visitors spent nearly $136 billion in total, of which 44% was spent in regional areas, making tourism vital to many of Australia’s regional communities.

International Visitor Survey and National Visitor Survey results, as well as State of the Industry , Tourism Investment Monitor , Tourism Businesses and Tourism Forecasts also contain regional information.

Destination Research

We manage the Destination Research program and work with states and territories to undertake tailored research. In 2017–18, the program will focus on regional dispersal and future technology disruptors at a national, state and regional level.

Local Government Area Profiles

We produce key metrics for international, domestic overnight and domestic day travellers to over 200 of Australia’s Local Government Areas.

Tourism Region Profiles

Our Tourism Region Profiles provide comprehensive tourism demand and supply data for 76 of Australia’s tourism regions and all states and territories.

Tourism Regions 2018

We provide maps of the tourism region boundaries within Australia, based on the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ 2016 edition of the Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS).
