Tourism plays a significant part in Australia’s economy, contributing 3.2%
to GDP and 4.9% to employment in 2016–17.
Satellite Account data shows that In 2016–17, consumption by domestic and international visitors was worth nearly $136 billion in total. For every dollar spent by tourists, 43 cents in every dollar went to regional areas, making tourism vital to many of Australia’s regional communities.

We manage the Destination Research program and work with states and territories to undertake tailored research. In 2017–18, the program will focus on regional dispersal and future technology disruptors at a national, state and regional level.
