Our National Visitor Survey (NVS) results provide statistics on how Australian residents travel within Australia. You can find national, state and territory results for the:

• number of trips taken
• number of nights spent on a trip
• amount spent on a trip.

You can also:

• read about the factors influencing travel within Australia
• see the changes compared over various timeframes impacted by bushfires and Coronavirus (COVID-19).

Key results

Domestic trips and spend

For the year ending March 2021:

• domestic overnight trips fell 35% to 72.8 million.
• spend fell 42% or $33.1 billion to $45.7 billion.

For the March quarter 2021:

• Overnight trips were up 1% to 24.6 million on March quarter 2020. Spend was unchanged at $17.9 billion.
• Intrastate travel continued to drive recovery. Intrastate overnight trips were up 13% to 19.3 million. Spend was 30% higher at $11.3 billion, as visitors took longer trips.
• Regional areas continued to fare better than capital cities. Overnight trips to regional Australia were up 12% to 17.8 million. Spend was up 23% to $12.0 billion.
• Australians enjoyed holidaying domestically. Overnight holiday trips were up 19% to 12.1 million. Spend was up 13% to $11.1 billion.

Total tourism

Total domestic and international tourism losses were $82.9 billion for the year ending March 2021. These losses comprised:

• $33.1 billion for domestic overnight travel.
• $9.1 billion for domestic day trips.
• $40.7 billion for international travel.
