Domestic tourism June 2023

The National Visitor Survey (NVS) monthly snapshots estimate tourism activity in the related month. We also produces quarterly and annual summaries.

This report compares the month of June 2023 with the pre-pandemic month of June 2022 unless stated otherwise.

Key results

June 2023 saw mixed domestic tourism results when compared to the June 2022. Overnight spend and trips were up. However, the number of nights away were down. 

When compared to June 2019, spend was up 23%. However, trips and nights were down 12% and 9% respectively. 

Breakdown of results

In June 2023:

  • spend was $7.5 billion. This was up 1% on June 2022 and 23% on June 2019.
  • visitors spent 28.4 million nights away. This was down 2% on June 2022 and 9% on June 2019.
  • there were 8.6 million overnight trips, up 2% on June 2022 and down 12% on June 2019. 
  • Early data shows domestic overnight trip rates for July 2023 were similar to July 2022, but were weaker than July 2019. Data for the first 3 weeks of August 2023 showed stronger results when compared to August 2019 and 2022.

The August 2023 trip rate shows 29% of NVS respondents interviewed in weeks 1, 2 and 3 took one or more overnight trips. The reference period for these interviews would be the preceding 28 days. The return date for some trips would be in July 2023. 

The overnight trip estimate of 8.6 million for June 2023 refers to trips that ended in the same month.

Spend by travel purpose

Results for June 2023, when compared to June 2022, show decreases in spend on:

  • overnight holiday travel 
  • travel to visit friends and family. 

These decreases in recreational travel spend were offset by increases in spend for business travel purposes. 

In June 2023, Australians spent:

  • $3.4 billion on holiday travel
  • $1.4 billion on travel to visit friends and family
  • $2.4 billion on travel for business purposes.

Compared to June 2022, this was a:

  • 11% decrease on holiday travel
  • 15% decrease on travel to visit friends and family
  • 41% increase on travel for business purposes.

Compared June 2019 (pre-COVID) this was a:

  • 40% increase on holiday travel
  • 10% increase on travel to visit friends and family
  • 16% increase on travel for business purposes.

Interstate and intrastate travel

Interstate

Interstate overnight trips and spend was weaker in June 2023 compared to the month of June 2022. 

In June 2023, Australians:

  • took 2.6 million interstate trips 
  • spent $3.9 billion.

Compared to June 2022, this was a:

  • 4% decrease in overnight trips
  • 6% decrease in spend.

Intrastate

Intrastate overnight trips and spend was strong in June 2023 compared to June 2022. 

In June 2023, Australians:

  • took 6.0 million intrastate trips
  • spent $3.6 billion.

Compared to June 2022, this was a:

  • 6% increase in overnight trips
  • 8% increase in spend.

Domestic day trips

In June 2023, Australians: 

  • took 17.2 million day trips 
  • spent $2.6 billion.

Compared to June 2022 this was a:

  • 9% increase in day trips 
  • 12% increase in spend.

Compared to a pre-COVID June 2019 this was a:

  • 14% decrease in day trips 
  • 31% increase in spend.
