Strategic regional research reports

This report examines the contribution of tourism to Queensland and its tourism regions.

Download Publication:

Queensland’s tourist economy grew rapidly in 2015–16, with domestic tourists consuming more than $23.0 billion worth of goods and services in the state (up by $1,635 million, or 8%, from 2014–15). Queensland also recorded growth in international arrivals over the period, with approximately 52 million visitor nights spent in Queensland.

The latest state Tourism Satellite Account (TSA) published by Tourism Research Australia (TRA) reports that in 2015–16, the tourism industry directly contributed $12.6 billion to Queensland’s economy (Gross State Product, or GSP) and directly employed approximately 137,600 people. Together with the indirect impacts, the industry’s total contribution to the economy reached an estimated $25.0 billion, or 8% of GSP.

This report goes beyond these state-wide findings to examine the role and contribution of the tourism industry at a regional level. The analysis is underpinned by benchmark industry data sourced from TRA, and a modelling framework consistent with that used in the national TSA (published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics) and state TSA. Estimates of the contribution of tourism to metrics such as employment and Gross Regional Product (GRP) are provided for all tourism regions in Queensland in the table below.
