CHANGES TO OVERSEAS ARRIVALS AND DEPARTURES (OAD) DATA
AND THEIR IMPACT ON TOURISM RESEARCH AUSTRALIA’S NATIONAL SURVEYS

OAD data (published by Australian Bureau of Statistics - ABS) are a key economic indicator and major input to migration and demographic statistics. A recent review by ABS identified a need to upgrade the methodology to improve data quality, and this will affect most OAD data. This includes data that are key benchmarking variables in the IVS and/or NVS:

  • short-term visitor arrivals
  • short-term resident departures
  • country of residence
  • country of main stay
  • reason for journey.

CHANGES TO AUSTRALIAN POPULATION ESTIMATES AND THEIR IMPACT ON TOURISM RESEARCH AUSTRALIA’S NATIONAL SURVEYS

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has revised historical data from 1991 to 2011 to deliver more reliable population time-series estimates for all regions of Australia. ABS’ projections of estimated resident population (ERP) for those aged 15 years or more are used as an input to National Visitor Survey (NVS) weighting. Therefore, changes to ERP projections will impact NVS results from 2014 onwards.

NATIONAL VISITOR SURVEY DUAL FRAME SAMPLE

Between 1998 and 2013, all interviews for TRA’s National Visitor Survey (NVS) were conducted via residential fixed-line telephones using Computer Assisted Telephone Interviewing (CATI). The NVS methodology has been updated and now incorporates interviews over mobile phone, as well as residential fixed-lines. This means that the NVS age profile will more closely reflect that of the population aged 15 years or more; addressing the under-coverage of young people (more likely to be mobile-only) and over-representation of older residents (more likely to live in fixed-line households).
